Favourite festival Holi, which is the festival of colours?

              ESSAY ON HOLI FESTIVAL
Holi is not just a festival of colours but has a religious significance.

It is believed that Prahlad, the son of Hiranyakashyap , a great devotee of Lord Vishnu was asked by his father, who was a demon, to stop worshipping Lord Vishnu.

Prahlad refused to do so and his father got so annoyed that he ordered his sister Holika, to sit in a burning pyre and burn Prahlad. As Prahlad had the protection of Lord Vishnu, nothing happened to him; instead Holika died a most painful death and was reduced to ashes. Holi therefore, signifies the victory of good over evil.

Who cannot associate Holi with colour, dance and song? It is one of the most enjoyable festival of North India. It is a festival day of fun and laughter, meeting relatives and friends and enjoying the occasion thoroughly.

Holi a Hindu festival,is celebrated on the full moon day of Phalgun in March or April, and like most Hindu festivals has no fixed date. It is also known as the  "Festival of Spring", for it is at this time of the year that the spring flowers are in full bloom. It is believed that the approach of summer commences with Holi.

In North India Holi is celebrated with coloured powder which people throw or rub on one another. Relatives and friends become unrecognisable with their coloured faces.

When the sun sets, bonfires are lit to mark the end of the festival. The Holi fire is then worshipped,as it has been done from time immemorial. Even though today Holi has no religious significance for many,it remains a festival of colours ,of fun and laughter for family and friends.
